AB 938

We need your support!

Cast and a growing coalition of advocates are calling on organizations like yours to submit letters of support for AB 938 (Bonta)—a critical bill that ensures survivors of human trafficking, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence can access legal remedies to clear criminal records tied to their victimization.

AB 938 addresses a serious legal flaw in California law: survivors who were forced to commit crimes under coercion, threat, or abuse are often denied vacatur relief and affirmative defense, leaving them criminalized for their own victimization. This bill would fix that injustice by allowing courts to fully consider survivors’ experiences when making decisions about convictions and sentencing.

We need as many letters of support as possible by March 18th, 2025, 5:00 PM PT deadline to show legislators that California stands with survivors.

How to Submit Your Support Letter:

  1. Use our Template Letter of Support
  2. Personalize it with information about your organization and why this issue matters to you.
  3. Submit via the Advocates Portal: https://calegislation.lc.ca.gov/Advocates
  4. Email a copy to Monica.Sepulveda@asm.ca.gov
Your organization’s voice can make a difference in ensuring survivors have a real chance to rebuild their lives. Please join us in supporting AB 938 and submit your letter today!

In Solidarity,

The Cast Policy Team
